Check the trolley first — this is usually it

Someone pulled the red emergency release cord and the trolley never re-engaged with the carriage. The motor runs the chain or belt normally; the door just is not attached to it.

    • Look along the rail: the trolley should sit locked into the carriage that the door arm connects to.
    • Close the door fully by hand.
    • Press the wall button — most openers re-latch when the trolley passes the carriage.
    • Or pull the red cord toward the door and release it to re-engage manually.
    • Listen for a distinct click.

This is a no-charge fix over the phone, and it is the single most common version of this call.

    A stripped drive gear

Chain-drive openers use a nylon worm gear that wears out, usually between 10 and 15 years, and much sooner if the door has been running heavy or unbalanced. The tell is a grinding hum and white or gray nylon shavings on the garage floor beneath the motor head.

Gear and sprocket kits are available for most major brands. On a unit under about ten years old with current safety features, a rebuild makes sense. On an older opener, replacement is the better value.

    Broken belt, chain or coupler

A snapped chain or belt is obvious once you look at the rail. On screw-drive units, a sheared plastic coupler between the motor and the drive shaft produces exactly this symptom while looking perfectly normal from below.

    Fix the reason it failed

Gears and belts rarely fail on a well-balanced door. When we replace one, we check spring balance, roller condition and door weight, because an opener lifting a heavy door will chew through a new gear in a year or two.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my garage door opener run but the door doesn't move?

Most often the trolley was disconnected by the red emergency release cord and never re-engaged. Close the door fully and press the wall button — most openers re-latch automatically when the trolley passes the carriage.

What does a stripped garage door opener gear sound like?

A grinding hum with no door movement, usually with white or gray nylon shavings on the floor under the motor head. Chain-drive openers commonly strip the drive gear between 10 and 15 years.

Is it worth replacing a stripped opener gear?

On an opener under about ten years old with current safety features, a gear and sprocket kit is good value. On an older unit, a new opener with a fresh warranty usually costs little more than the repair.
