Garage door stuck in the open position above a residential garage

Why the door will not come down

Almost every stuck-open door traces back to one of these.

    • Blocked or unplugged safety sensors — the opener refuses to close on purpose.
    • A broken torsion spring; the door is too heavy to lower under control.
    • A cable off the drum, leaving the door hanging crooked.
    • A stripped opener drive gear — the motor runs but nothing moves.
    • A lost or disconnected trolley after someone pulled the red release cord.

Closing the door manually — and when not to

If and only if the springs are intact and the door hangs level, you can close it by hand. Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the trolley, then lower the door slowly with both hands, staying to the side.

Do not attempt this if you see a gap in the spring above the door, if one side sits higher than the other, or if the door feels extremely heavy. In those cases the door can slam down with hundreds of pounds of force.

Rule of thumb: if the door does not stay put at waist height on its own, its balance is gone — leave it alone.

    Securing the opening overnight

When the door genuinely cannot be closed safely, secure what you can while you wait for service.

    • Lock the interior door between the garage and the house.
    • Move bikes, tools and anything valuable out of sight or indoors.
    • Park a vehicle across the opening as a physical barrier.
    • Turn on a garage light and any exterior camera you have.
    • Unplug the opener so nobody can operate a damaged door.

    What the repair usually involves

Broken springs are replaced in pairs with matched cycle ratings. Cables are replaced as a pair and re-wound on the drums under controlled tension. A stripped gear can be rebuilt on newer openers; on older units, replacement is the better value. Every visit ends with a balance test and an auto-reverse test.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I close a garage door that is stuck open?

If the springs are intact and the door hangs level, pull the red release cord and lower it slowly by hand from the side. If you see a gap in the spring, the door hangs crooked, or it feels very heavy, do not attempt it — the door can drop.

Is a garage door stuck open an emergency?

We treat it as one. It leaves the garage and often an unlocked interior door exposed, so it should be secured the same day. Lock the interior door, move valuables out of sight, and park a vehicle across the opening while you wait.

Why won't my garage door close but it opens fine?

Most often the safety sensors are blocked, misaligned or unplugged, since the opener only enforces them on the closing cycle. Broken springs, a cable off the drum and a close-limit set incorrectly are the other common causes.
