Where windows go and how they are arranged

Almost all residential window sections sit in the top panel, where they light the garage without exposing the contents.

    • Single row across the top section — the standard configuration
    • Sunburst, arched and cathedral grille patterns for traditional homes
    • Plank or prairie grilles for craftsman and carriage looks
    • Frosted rectangles in a modern grid for contemporary elevations
    • Full-view doors, where every section is glazed

Glazing choices and what they cost you

The glass type changes light, privacy, heat and price.

    • Single-pane acrylic or glass — cheapest, lowest thermal performance
    • Insulated dual-pane — best comfort, heavier, worth it on attached garages
    • Obscure, frosted or seeded glass — full daylight with complete privacy
    • Tinted or low-E glass — reduces glare and heat on west-facing doors
    • Tempered or laminated glass — required for safety, laminated adds security

    Security and practical concerns

Clear windows in a garage let anyone see whether a car is home and what tools are inside — the reason we recommend obscure glazing for street-facing doors. Keep the emergency release cord out of reach of a coat hanger, and never mount a wall control where it can be seen through the glass.

Adding windows to an existing door

If the door model offers factory window sections, a top section swap is a clean and affordable upgrade. Cutting glass into a non-window panel is not something we recommend: it weakens the section, voids the warranty and rarely seals well. Windows also add weight, so the springs should be checked afterward.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do windows reduce a garage door's insulation?

Slightly. A single row of insulated glass in the top section has a small effect; full-view glazing has a large one.

Can I get windows without losing privacy?

Yes — frosted, obscure or seeded glass passes almost all the light while making the interior invisible from the street. It is the most popular choice we install.

Is glass in a garage door safe with kids around?

Yes when it is tempered, which is standard. Laminated glass or polycarbonate adds impact resistance if a ball game happens in the driveway.
