The outside keypad takes more abuse than any other part of your opener system — summer heat, driving rain off the driveway, and years of finger pressure on the same four keys. Here is how to tell a dead battery from a dead keypad.

Replace the battery before anything else

Almost all wireless keypads run on a single 9-volt battery, and most homeowners have never changed it. A weak battery lights the keys but cannot transmit far enough to reach the opener.

    • Slide the cover up or off — many models hinge from the top.
    • Use a fresh alkaline 9-volt; avoid old drawer batteries.
    • Check for green or white powder in the compartment. That corrosion must be cleaned off or the new battery will not make contact.
    • Expect two to three years of life in Georgia heat, less on a west-facing wall.

The code was wiped or never saved

Removing the battery for more than a minute clears the stored PIN on some models, and a lightning surge can clear the opener's memory of the keypad entirely.

Reprogramming is the same process as a remote: press Learn on the motor head, then enter your PIN and press Enter on the keypad within 30 seconds. If the door moves, you are done.

    Moisture and heat damage

Keypads are weather-resistant, not waterproof. Once water gets behind the keypad membrane it corrodes the contacts, and you get keys that only work sometimes or a keypad that triggers on its own.

    • Cracked or peeling keypad membrane — replace the unit; sealing it never lasts.
    • Faded, sticky keys that need heavy pressure indicate worn contacts.
    • Mount replacements under the trim overhang, not on an exposed brick face.
    • A keypad that opens the door randomly is a security problem — replace it immediately.

When the keypad is not the problem

If the keypad, all remotes and the wall button have all stopped working, the issue is upstream: opener power, a tripped GFCI outlet, or a failed logic board. Check the outlet with a phone charger first — a tripped receptacle behind the motor head is a very common cause and costs nothing to reset.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a garage door keypad use?

Nearly all wireless keypads use a single 9-volt alkaline battery, and in Georgia heat it lasts about two to three years. Clean any corrosion off the contacts before installing the new one.

Why does my keypad code no longer work?

Removing the battery for too long or a power surge can clear the stored PIN, or the opener may have lost the keypad from memory. Press Learn on the motor head and re-enter your PIN on the keypad within 30 seconds.

Can rain damage an outdoor garage door keypad?

Yes. Keypads are weather-resistant, not waterproof. Once water gets behind the key membrane the contacts corrode, causing keys that work intermittently or a keypad that triggers on its own — which is a security risk and should be replaced.
