Start with the battery and the button contacts

A remote battery does not die all at once. It fades, so the remote starts working only from a few feet away before it stops entirely. If your remote's range shrank over the last few weeks, the battery is almost certainly the cause.

    • Most visor remotes use a CR2032 or CR2016 coin cell; sold at any grocery store.
    • Wipe the battery contacts with a dry cloth — sweat and corrosion block the connection.
    • Press each button and watch the small LED. No LED at all means no power.
    • If the LED lights but the door does nothing, the remote has power and the problem is pairing or reception.

Check for lock mode on the wall panel

Nearly every modern wall console has a lock or vacation button. Held down for a few seconds, it disables all remotes so nobody outside can open the door — a great feature that also gets pressed by accident constantly.

Look for a blinking light on the wall console. Hold the lock button for two seconds until the blinking stops, then try the remote again.

In our experience, an accidental lock mode explains roughly one in five remote calls.

Reprogram the remote to the opener

Power surges and logic board resets can wipe stored remotes. Reprogramming takes under a minute and does not require a technician.

    • Find the Learn or Program button on the back of the motor head, usually under the light cover.
    • Press it once — an LED lights up and you have about 30 seconds.
    • Press and hold the remote button until the opener lights flash or you hear a click.
    • Test from inside the garage, then from the driveway.

When it is interference or a failing receiver

If a fresh battery and reprogramming do not help, the opener's receiver may be losing sensitivity, or something nearby is drowning out the signal.

    • LED shop lights and bulbs are the number one interference source — swap the opener bulb for a rough-service incandescent or an LED rated for garage door openers.
    • New Wi-Fi mesh points, EV chargers and 5G modems in the garage can also blanket the frequency.
    • Older single-frequency openers lose receiver range as the board ages; an external receiver or an opener replacement solves it.
    • If the remote works only within 3 feet of the motor, the receiver is the suspect, not the remote.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my garage door remote work sometimes but not always?

Intermittent operation almost always means a weakening battery or a receiver losing sensitivity. Replace the coin cell first, then check whether an LED bulb in the opener is causing radio interference.

How do I reprogram a garage door remote?

Press the Learn or Program button on the back of the motor head once, then within 30 seconds hold the remote button until the opener lights flash or you hear a click. Test from inside, then from the driveway.

Can a lock button on the wall stop my remote from working?

Yes. The lock or vacation button disables all remotes while the wall button keeps working. Hold it for about two seconds until the blinking light stops to turn it off.
