Tracks guide the door, they do not carry it. When a track is out of alignment the rollers fight the geometry on every cycle, and the door eventually jumps out entirely.

How to spot a misaligned track
You can check this with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
- A visible gap between the roller wheel and the inside face of the track.
- Scraping or rubbing that changes pitch at a specific point in travel.
- Bright metal wear marks on the track flange.
- The door binds or slows at the curve between vertical and horizontal track.
- Track brackets with elongated bolt holes or a bracket you can move by hand.
What knocks tracks out of line
In almost every case there is a specific event or an underlying imbalance behind it.
- A vehicle bumper contacting the door or the vertical track.
- Loose lag bolts in the jamb — vibration works them out over years.
- Ladders, shelving or bikes leaned against the track.
- Running an unbalanced door, which side-loads the rollers.
- Settling of a wood jamb in a garage with moisture damage.
What correct repair looks like
Bending a track back with pliers is a temporary patch that leaves a work-hardened kink. Proper correction means loosening the bracket, re-plumbing the track to spec clearance from the door face, torquing the fasteners into sound wood or masonry anchors, and replacing bent sections rather than reshaping them.
After alignment, the door is balance-tested by hand and the rollers are checked for bent stems, since a dragging roller will pull the track back out of line.
Why not to keep operating it
A door running on a misaligned track is one obstruction away from coming off entirely, which bends panels and can pull the opener from the ceiling. Unplug the opener and use the other door until it is corrected.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my garage door track is misaligned?
Look for a gap between the roller and the inside face of the track, bright wear marks on the track flange, scraping that changes pitch at one point in travel, or a door that binds at the curve. Check with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
Can I bend a garage door track back into place?
Bending steel back with pliers work-hardens it and leaves a weak kink that will fail again. Proper repair means loosening the bracket, re-plumbing the track to spec clearance and replacing bent sections.
What causes garage door tracks to go out of alignment?
Vehicle contact, lag bolts vibrating loose in the jamb, ladders or shelving leaning on the track, and running an unbalanced door that side-loads the rollers.
