Carriage House Garage Doors: Overlay Styles, Weight and Hardware
Carriage house doors give you the look of swing-out barn doors with the mechanics of a modern sectional door. They are the most popular upgrade we install on craftsman, farmhouse and traditional homes across Cherokee and Cobb counties — but the extra material has real consequences for hardware.

About our team →Overlay vs. stamped carriage doors
There are two very different ways to get the carriage look, and they are not priced or built alike.
- Overlay carriage doors — a steel or composite base door with genuine trim boards and stiles applied on top. Deep shadow lines, most authentic look, heaviest.
- Stamped (embossed) carriage doors — the pattern is pressed into the steel skin. Lighter and cheaper, flatter appearance up close.
- Wood and wood-composite carriage doors — real cladding over an insulated core, the premium tier, with refinishing upkeep.
Why weight matters more here
Overlays and decorative hardware can add 60 to 120 lbs to a double door. If the installer reuses the old springs or picks the wrong wire size, the door runs out of balance, the opener strains and the springs fail years early.
Every carriage door we install gets springs calculated to the finished door weight, and we recommend high-cycle springs whenever the door is the household's main entrance.
Windows, hardware and finishing details
The details are what sell the look, and each one has a practical side.
- Top-section windows with grilles — arched, square or plank-style; insulated glass keeps R-value up.
- Decorative handles and strap hinges — non-functional, mounted to the top and bottom sections only.
- Finish options — factory-painted steel in almond, white, sandstone, bronze and black, or woodgrain composite.
- Trim and stops — replacing the jamb trim during install is what makes a new door look finished.
Living with a carriage door in Georgia
Humidity and afternoon sun are the enemies of real wood. Steel or composite overlay doors handle it with almost no maintenance; painted wood needs inspection every couple of years, especially along the bottom rail where water sits. Keep the bottom seal in good shape and the door will outlast the paint.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do carriage house doors swing open?
Almost never. Nearly all carriage house doors are sectional doors that roll up on tracks; the swing-out look comes from the panel design and decorative hardware.
Are carriage house doors worth the extra cost?
For curb appeal, yes — the garage door is often a third of a home's front elevation. Choose an insulated steel overlay door for the best balance of looks, durability and low upkeep.
Will my existing opener handle a carriage door?
A 1/2 HP opener can struggle with a heavy overlay double door. We size springs to the new weight and recommend 3/4 HP or a wall-mount opener for the heaviest doors.
