    Real wood: species and construction

Wood doors are usually a frame-and-panel slab, or a wood cladding applied over an insulated core for better thermal performance.

    • Cedar — stable, naturally rot-resistant, takes stain beautifully; the most common premium choice
    • Hemlock and fir — economical paint-grade options
    • Mahogany and accoya — top-tier stability and rot resistance at the highest price
    • Overlay construction — cedar or mahogany face over insulated steel or composite base

    Wood composite: the practical alternative

Composite doors use engineered board or fiberboard skins with a molded woodgrain texture over an insulated core. They hold paint extremely well, do not rot or split, resist humidity swings, and weigh far less than solid wood — which means smaller springs and less hardware stress. On a driveway, most people cannot tell an overlay composite carriage door from painted wood.

    Maintenance reality in Georgia humidity

This is the part that decides whether a wood door is right for you.

    • Inspect the finish annually, especially the bottom rail and the sun-facing side
    • Re-stain or repaint every 2 to 4 years; south and west exposures need it sooner
    • Keep the bottom seal intact — standing water is what destroys wood doors
    • Never pressure-wash a wood door; it drives water into the joints
    • Watch for swollen sections that bind in the track after a wet season

    Weight, springs and openers

A real-wood double door can exceed 400 lbs. That requires correctly calculated torsion springs (often high-cycle), heavy-duty hinges, 13-ball or steel rollers, and a 3/4 HP or wall-mount opener. Reusing the springs from a lighter steel door is the single most common mistake we find on wood door installations, and it destroys openers.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a wood garage door last?

Twenty-five years or more if the finish is maintained, but only about ten if it is neglected — water intrusion at the joints is what ends wood doors.

Is composite as good as real wood?

For durability and cost of ownership it is better; for authentic grain and the ability to refinish in any color, real wood still wins. Composite is the right answer for most homeowners.

    Are wood doors insulated?

Solid wood insulates modestly on its own. For real performance, choose a wood-clad door built over an insulated steel or composite core.
