Commercial Garage Door Sizes and Cycle Ratings

Commercial openings are sized around freight, not cars. Beyond dimensions, the number that really matters is the cycle rating: a dock door opening 40 times a day burns through residential hardware in a single season. Here is how commercial sizing and duty ratings work.

    Typical commercial opening sizes

Sizes vary by use, but these ranges cover most of what we service across North Metro Atlanta.

    • Loading dock doors: 8' or 9' wide x 8' to 10' tall, matched to trailer heights
    • Warehouse drive-through: 10' to 14' wide x 12' to 16' tall for box trucks and forklifts
    • Service bays and auto shops: 10' x 10' or 12' x 12' with a lift in mind
    • Self-storage: 5' to 10' wide light-duty coiling doors
    • Fire station and equipment bays: 14' or wider, often 14' tall or more

    Cycle ratings and high-cycle springs

One cycle is one open and one close. Residential springs are rated at 10,000 cycles — barely a year on a busy dock.

    • Standard: 10,000 cycles — home use only
    • 25,000 cycles — light commercial, a few dozen openings a day
    • 50,000 to 100,000 cycles — active docks, warehouses and shops
    • Bearings, drums, shafts and cables should be upgraded alongside the springs

    Operators and safety devices

Commercial doors use trolley, jackshaft or hoist operators sized to door weight and duty, with a manual chain hoist backup on many installations. Safety edges (reversing edges), photo eyes, and monitored entrapment protection are required on power-operated commercial doors, and they are the parts most often found bypassed on doors we inspect.

Planning clearances in a working building

Sprinkler mains, lighting, ductwork, conveyors and lifts all compete for the ceiling. Rolling steel doors need headroom for the coil but no backroom; sectional doors need backroom but less headroom. We measure the opening plus the obstructions before recommending which format keeps your building working.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a high-cycle spring and do I need one?

It is a spring wound from heavier wire on a larger diameter so it survives many more cycles. Any door opening more than about 15 times a day should be on high-cycle springs.

Do you offer maintenance contracts for multiple doors?

Yes — per-opening quarterly or semi-annual plans with priority dispatch, common for warehouses, self-storage and auto shops.

How fast can you respond to a down dock door?

Down commercial doors get priority dispatch, same day whenever possible across Canton, Woodstock, Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, Alpharetta and Roswell. Call (470) 999-6963.
