Custom and Oversized Garage Doors: RV, Tall and Odd Openings

When the opening does not match a stocked size — an RV bay, a converted carport, a barn with a 14-foot header — the door becomes a custom order. Custom is not just a bigger price tag; it changes the hardware, the operator and the timeline.

    Common custom scenarios

Most custom doors we install fall into one of these categories.

    • RV and boat bays: 12' x 12', 14' x 14', 16' x 16' openings
    • Tall shop doors for lifts, dump trailers or equipment
    • Non-standard widths from older homes and additions (8'2", 15'6", 17'4")
    • Openings shortened by low headroom, ductwork or a finished ceiling
    • Full-view glass or real-wood doors built to a design specification

What changes when the door gets big

Weight and span scale faster than size, so hardware upgrades are not optional.

    • Heavier-gauge sections, multiple struts and reinforced end stiles
    • Larger shaft diameter, double or high-cycle springs, heavy-duty bearings
    • 13-ball or 3-inch rollers and heavier track (2 inch vs 3 inch)
    • 3/4 HP to 1 HP openers, or a jackshaft/hoist operator on the largest doors
    • Wind-load engineering where the span and exposure require it

    Framing and finish work

An odd opening is usually fixed with jamb build-out, new stops and trim rather than a custom-width door — cheaper and just as clean. Larger corrections mean touching the header, which is structural carpentry and needs to be scoped before any door is ordered. We will tell you honestly which route your opening needs.

    Lead times and planning

Stocked residential doors are usually available within days. Custom sizes, special colors, real wood and full-view glass are built to order and commonly take two to six weeks. If a vehicle is trapped or the opening cannot be secured, we can install a temporary fix or a stock door and swap later.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest residential garage door available?

Custom sectional doors go up to about 20 feet wide and 16 feet tall for residential shops and RV bays; larger spans move into commercial door construction.

Is a custom door much more expensive?

Yes, typically because of heavier hardware, engineered springs and a built-to-order slab — not just the extra square footage. We quote the hardware and door separately so you can see where the money goes.

My opening is 8'2" wide. What are my options?

In most cases we build out the jambs to a true 8 feet and install a stock door with trim that hides the difference — far cheaper than a custom-width slab.
